A Fairey Aviation Company Swordfish. British-built, carrier-based biplane torpedo bombers that were already obsolete at the outbreak of the First World War (WWII), Swordfish were nonetheless successfully and spectacularly used by the Royal Navy in a nighttime attack of 21 of the bombers against the Italian Navy on 11–12 November 1940 in what was named the Battle of Taranto. The Italian fleet effectively lost half of its capital ships in the battle while the British suffered only two planes lost—2 crew members killed in action and the other 2 captured. British naval commanders had braced themselves for an anticipated 50% casualty rate. -- source link
