Mr. Rockefeller Submits to an InterviewSeptember 12, 1905 John D. Rockefeller talks through his wig, speaking to a tiny newsman. He is saying “I love my fellow man, He is worth the deepest study. Time will straighten out many things. People will know the truth about me some day. It take patience and courage to compel men to have confidence in you. I have both. The caption reads "It would almost seem that John D. might be talking thru his wig.”This is a play on the phrase talking though one’s hat, meaning to speak nonsense. Rockefeller was the richest man in the world, and had done horrible things in the pursuit of his wealth, but considered himself a great man and philanthropist. Rockefeller was also bald (he had alopecia) and wore a wig. See Also: John D.
