Epiphysis are bony caps at the ends of bone, found in young mammals. These “endcaps” allow the bone to grow. As the animal ages, these caps fuse to their associated bones, a process called Ossification.These bony “endcaps” are considered separate bones, and it is for this reason that young mammals have far more bones than adults. Human infants are born with ~305 bones. By age 25, a person only has ~206 left, around one hundred of those bones having fused to other bones. It’s important to note that epiphysis are not the same as vertebral disks.
