occultpassion: The Black MausoleumLocated in Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh, Scotland, The Black Mausoleum is the final resting place of Sir George MacKenzie. The mausoleum is considered to be the site of the most documented cases of paranormal activity. MacKenzie was a Lawyer and Lord Advocate in the 17th century. During this time one of the most gruesome religious persecutions in history took place in Scotland. King Charles II’s army defeated the Covenanter Rebels, who wanted to practice Presbyterianism instead of Anglicanism. Over 600 people were killed in the battle, mostly on the side of the rebels, but the army was not finished with them. The surviving rebels were taken prisoner and marched 40 miles to Greyfriars Kirkyard, where they were kept until they could be tried. This is where MacKenzie came in. He acted as a judge for the trials of the rebels, and condemned the majority of them to death. For this he earned the nickname “Bloody MacKenzie”, although it is unclear how he felt about situation because he let it be known that he would follow the letter of the law regardless of his own beliefs. It is still argued today whether he was a bloodthirsty sadist or just a man who was loyal to a twisted ruler. After all was done, he was responsible for about 18,000 deaths. Regardless of his intentions, when he died in 1691 his remains were interred at the very graveyard where the people he condemned were kept. In 1998, a homeless man found himself caught in a rainstorm without any shelter nearby. He came upon the Kirkyard and figured that the mausoleum would be an acceptable place to stay dry that night. The man decided to look for anything valuable in the tomb and pried open several caskets. When he reached MacKenzie’s, the floor underneath his feet gave and he fell through the floor and under the tomb. When he looked around him, he saw hundreds of human remains. It is believed that these bodies were dumped in a large hole in the graveyard during the spread of the Plague. Some of the bodies still had flesh rotting on their bones. The man climbed out of the hole and ran out into the pouring rain. Since this incident, over 500 people have reported strange happenings around and in the mausoleum. It has become such a big tourist site that City of The Dead Tours has begun taking tour groups through the graveyard and into the tomb. People become mysteriously injured when in the tomb, most don’t even notice that they have been hurt until they exit the mausoleum. Some pass out before even making it to the structure. People often come out with bleeding scratches, bruises, and even broken fingers. One woman claims to have felt a hand grab her ankle when inside it and says that since that day the ankle has always been cold and in the summer her skin tans, except for the skin which was touched in the Kirkyard. The tours still run and a ticket will cost you 10 pounds.(Source) (Source) (Source) (Source) (Source) -- source link
