kyle-marffin: Though born in England (b. 1949), artist Nigel Van Wieck is really a Yank, residing in New York. And it seems that the 20th century American realist painters are his inspiration as well – Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer, for example, but most of all, the artist’s fascination with Edward Hopper ought to be very apparent. Van Wieck works in both easel painting and pastels, and I’ll guess from the look of some of the works, both oil (or acrylic) and watercolor. Hopper? Well, yes…obviously. But they’re Hopper-today, and distinctly Van Wieck, no mere homages. These works embody so much of that elusive character I often think about when I use the made-up term “Noir-Artica”. You’ll indulge me if I post more of Nigel Van Wieck’s somber, lonely, grim but incredibly beautiful paintings in subsequent posts. Me? I can’t stop looking at them. Each seems to tell a tale, and each tempts me to hit the keyboard with tales that ought to be told. -- source link
