memory-of-the-romanovs:Император Всероссийский Николай II | Emperor of All Russia Nicholas II (1868-1917).Nicholas II - the last Tsar of Russia was born on May 18, 1868. He inherited the throne when his father, Alexander III, died in 1894. Nicholas II ruled from 1 November 1894 until his forced abdication on 15 March 1917. His reign saw Imperial Russia go from being one of the foremost great powers of the world to economic and military collapse. In 1904, Nicholas took his country into war with Japan. Russia’s embarrassing defeat ruined the monarchy’s prestige among all sectors of society, the nobility and the peasants, leading to a revolution in 1905 and to an event that became known as Bloody Sunday. When World War One started in August 1914, Russia responded by patriotically rallying around Nicholas II but the Russian army suffered heavy loses and was defeated, resulting in a political crisis. Nicholas II was arrested by order of the revolutionary government. Bolsheviks executed him and his family on July 17, 1918, in Yekaterinburg, Russia.“All around me there is betrayal, cowardice and deceit.” - entry from the diary of Nicholas II (March 2, 1917, the day of his abdication). -- source link
