Amsterdam:As my family and I bicycled through Amsterdam’s bustling Jordaan, we were accompanied by what felt like the whole city; new parents riding with their infants to older folks just the same. Everywhere we went there were hidden layers, old creations turned new, formerly dilapidated buildings turned into vibrant destinations. Even the castoffs of abandoned docks and ships were reclaimed for homes, art, and businesses all renovated within their small footprint. Our captivating guide showed us the city through a historian and artist’s perspective; hidden courtyards were accessed through glossy blue and green doors, which appeared to be part of the residential façade. At a run-down rail yard, he led us through an opening in one of the shipping containers - now a flourishing restaurant. Amsterdam, showed me how engineering can empower cities like mine, with constrained resources and complex natural environments, to innovate. And, inspired me to help transform cluttered, urban centers into thriving bicycle and pedestrian communities. -- source link
