Oh yeah here’s a weird item I forgot I had: The Texas Advanced Computing Centre Commemorative Belt Buckle for the Stampede 2 supercomputer. The University of Texas has several very good supercomputers, all named in very, very texan style (Corral, Ranger, Stampedes 1 and 2, etc.) Stampede 2 is a more recent one. When we were visiting there for training they gave us some cool supercomputer-branded stuff, which is a) a weird as hell thing for a supercomputer to have in general and b) cool as hell. When supercomputers get retired, they usually get passed down to other universities and institutions with less funding, for instance, bits and pieces of an old Texas supercomputer, Ranger, can be found in research institutions and universities all over Africa, including at the University of the Witwatersrand (where I believe most of it went) and at the research centre where I’m training at the moment. Stampede is currently pretty new, so it’ll be a few years before it gets taken apart and passed around. -- source link
