cosplayinamerica:I have always been really interested in cosplay mashups, and you always see a bunch of different mashups for Disney cosplays. I love history and with everything going on socially and politically in the United States, I thought it would be a really cool idea to mix Disney princesses with suffragettes. I have been talking about getting a group together since I started cosplaying, but I wanted my skills to grow enough to the point where I would be confident in executing such intricately detailed garments. Because, let me tell you. Victorian fashion is as extra as it gets!We all did a lot of research on our costumes, and of the movement itself. The suffragette movement spanned a 70-year arc, and in that time, fashion changed so, so much. The movement began in 1849 and ended in 1920, when the 19th amendment was passed. Personally, I looked at the various fashions from each decade within the 70 year arc and decided which I liked and which I didn’t. I knew for a fact that I did not want to wear a hoop skirt, so that eliminated a lot of the Civil War-era costumes. I enjoy the bustled look and a lot of structure, so I started looking at fashions in the 1870s. Eventually, time was running out and I had to change my ideas so the costume would be done in time for the convention, but I will be remaking the costume to be reminiscent of my original design for a future event.I grew a lot as a seamstress while making this costume. I pushed myself to make my sewing more precise and clean. When I remake it, I’m going to push harder to make it as historically accurate as I can, and give myself enough time to execute it exactly the way I had envisioned it.The reception was overwhelmingly positive. Even as we were walking down the street from our hotel to the convention center, people were honking and leaning out of their car windows to try and snap a photo of us. Because of the great success, our group grew to include many, many more princesses and female protagonists. I’m so excited to get a big group of women together who want to send out a positive message of strength and support. After the Disney cosplay meet-up, we were waiting for a photographer friend of ours to do some shooting and a mom with two daughters walked by us. We all had signs that said “Votes for Women” on one side and a cute little saying that had something to do with the movies our characters came from, or our characters themselves (for example, mine as Sleeping Beauty said, “Stay Woke”). The older of the two little girls read the “Votes for Women” side of our signs out loud and said, “I’d vote for you!” It was precious. We used that as an opportunity to talk to the little girl about how important it is to vote when you grow up, because that’s how you can make your voice heard. We talked about how women weren’t allowed to vote until a very brave group decided that enough was enough and that women should be able to vote, same as men. It was a really sweet and innocent moment that I hope stays with her for a very long time. Voting is so important, especially now. Please make sure you go out and make your voices heard!I’ve met some truly amazing people because of cosplay. I’ve managed to find some of the most loving, giving, and talented people because of this silly little hobby I’ve fallen into. I can’t imagine my life without them, to be quite honest. I always need some kind of creative outlet in my life. When I lived in the Bay Area, I did Rocky Horror and burlesque. Now that I’m in LA, I’ve given up on those two hobbies and gotten into cosplay. I’ve been able to take a skill I learned when I was a little girl and turn it into a very nerdy passion that I can’t imagine my life without. I’m grateful for cosplay and the warm and welcoming community I’ve chosen to become part of.Don’t be afraid to get out there and do what you love. It doesn’t matter if you hand stitched every bit of your costume together or if you’ve pieced it together from things you found at a thrift store. If you’re interested in cosplay, DO IT! Everyone starts somewhere and you won’t know how much you love it until you try. It doesn’t matter what other people think. If you’re having a good time and you love what you’re wearing, go out and rock it.
