The second entry we’ve found for @um_spec_coll and @pemlibrary ’s #SpineTingling challenge are these volumes of *Bartlett’s Personal Narrative of Explorations and Incidents in Texas, New Mexico, California, Sonora, and Chihuahua* (New York, 1854). These gilded cactus spines certainly send a shiver down our less-prickly human spines. Here the publisher’s decorations add an eye-catching and evocatively southwestern touch to these volumes, and were enough to draw us to this important work by linguist and historian John Russell Bartlett.
