sk931:In 1990 the biggest prison riot broke out in Strangeways Prison, Manchester, UK. Two inmates, Paul Taylor and Alan Lord planned to take over the prison via the prison chapel on the morning of April 1st 1990, to protest against the treatment of prisoners. The riot quickly got out of hand, the prison guards were given orders not to march back into the prison by the Governor which subsequently lead to the riot lasting 25 days, sparking the interest of the world media and causing copycat riots in prisons up and down the country. In the aftermath of the riot, the Woolf Report lead to changes in the British prison system. “Slopping out” ended and prisoner’s complaints are now heard. Still, 71 out of 118 prisons in England and Wales are overcrowded and despite England and Wales having the highest imprisonment rate in Europe, these numbers continue to grow. -- source link
