impossiblethief: otakusiren: Even though the latest chapter hasn’t been translated yet for the Magic Kaito manga, I found a Chinese raw scan online. What I find cute about this scene (without understanding what’s being said), is the fact that Kaito and Aoko went out for drinks together at Jii’s bar. I’m curious to find out why they’re at the bar to begin with and if it was suggested by Kaito or by Aoko. Because from the looks of it, I know this much is being said by the both of them: Kaito is still gloomy over the fact that his plan to swipe away the jewel he wanted to steal was ruined by the interference of Hakuba and Aoko’s father. Aoko is proud of the fact that her father was able to stop Kaito Kid from taking another jewel and decides to drink in celebration with Kaito at Jii’s bar. (Well, that’s what I think at least, don’t know until the English translations come out). But what I like the most from this scene is that they actually LOOK like an actual couple. They’re listening to each other’s news without interrupting them and they’re interacting just like Heiji & Kazuha would whenever they hang out. Even though Kaito looks like he’s completely annoyed by Aoko’s bragging about her father beating him at a heist, he still doesn’t get super angry with her like he wants to. Kaito instead acts politely and pretends to be happy with Aoko as they get their drinks. So what I get from this scene is: Kaito & Aoko hang out and celebrate at Jii’s bar and Kaito gives Aoko a present to give to her father (Which turns out to be a hidden camera tie pin). But I’m glad Gosho Aoyama is giving these two some more scenes together and are having them interact with each other. Can’t wait to read this in English because I know I’m probably gonna fangirl because I ship these two HARD. I SEE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT MY OTP LET ME TELL YOU SOME THINGS ABOUT KUROBA KAITO AND NAKAMORI AOKO. I also enjoyed that we got to see them hanging out at Jii’s bar in this chapter! It’s very subtle, but I think the simple act of hanging out on their off time says a WHOLE LOT about their relationship in general. It shows that they’re obviously more than just school friends! It shows that, despite the fact that they may grouch or grumble at each other (see: Kaito grumbling about Aoko’s peppiness that her father “beat” Kaitou Kid), they still delight in each other’s company enough that hanging out is a common occurrence for them. And the best part of this? This chapter isn’t the first time we actually see them hanging out like normal high schoolers do! For instance, we know for a fact that they’ve gone scuba diving together. We know that they have chilled at amusement parks together, too (and even though this “date” was a cover for Aoko to prove that Kaito wasn’t Kid, they have too much genuine fun for that to have been the first time they’ve truly hung out). They also play video games, play billiards at Jii’s bar (and then later sneak into an 18+ bar to help retrieve Jii’s pool cue), plan and decorate for a Christmas party, go ice skating, see a play, and even go see a movie. BUT STYX you are probably thinking ALL OF THIS SEEMS VERY MUNDANE. OF COURSE HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS ARE GOING TO HANG OUT. Why yes, and that is exactly my point. Gosho (and fiction in general) tend to write romances as something ~huge and groundbreaking~ which can be rather fun to read but sometimes feels artificial and unrealistic (though that doesn’t necessarily make things less shippable, of course!) What we rarely ever see in fiction are couples being couples in really mundane and normal ways. These are the things that don’t need a lot of attention (and thus are very subtle) because… well, they’re not very exciting! But they really do mean a lot when it comes to interpreting relationships in fiction. That’s one of the things I really like about this pairing. We’re told that Kaito and Aoko are childhood friends, sure, but not only are we told that, Gosho goes out of his way to show that to us as well. Not only do we see them genuinely enjoying each other’s presence in the more “boring” and “mundane” aspects of life (with some grumpiness and teasing on both ends, but I’d argue that the grumpiness and teasing comes from years upon years of knowing each other so well that they can playfully bicker with each other without hurting any feelings), but we also see the ~huge and groundbreaking~ moments that show they truly care for each other. Like that time Kaito stole an entire clocktower for Aoko (!!!), or that time Aoko expressed that she wanted Kaito to succeed, even if it meant succeeding without her… and Kaito so NO FUCK THAT SHIT WE’RE GONNA SUCCEED TOGETHER. The huge moments are super telling, but what makes them truly fun is that they aren’t a pairing made up of ONLY huge moments… they’re a pairing made up of smaller ones as well, small moments that really make you think that they’d still really care about each other even as they grow older and have to do dumb boring things together like go grocery shopping for milk or stand in line at the bank. I love their big moments, but their small moments… the small things like Aoko grabbing his dumb arm are what truly make them as a ship for me. IN SUMMATION, the manga text makes it HELLA CLEAR that these two really do have a deep relationship and that they’re more than just a childhood romance by name. They’ve had a lot of time to really get to know and appreciate each other and you can extrapolate sooooo much about them just from two pages of them getting drinks at Jii’s bar. tl;dr styx shut up about your stupid ship NO NEVER 8( NEVERRRR -- source link
