hehasawifeyouknow: A regular symposium scene you might think, and you’d be right but this one is by the Naukratis Painter and is old Laconic style meaning this is likely a Spartan symposium. For a race who only let their hair down when they faced death (literally so, Spartans combed their hair in preparation for battle - at Thermopylae a spy sent by Xerxes reported this back to the King who had to get Demaratus, a Spartan, to explain it!) it’s fair to say that Spartans at leisure isn’t a common theme. It dates to the middle 6th century BCE and features your normal reclined figures, apart from being a rare scene of Spartan leisure there are some very interesting winged figures depicted. These alternate from being sirens to what are most probably erotes which are Aphrodites winged revenue associated with love and sex. The addition of the sirens makes a bit more sense now, the notion of desire and the winged figures are adding to this. Here was a romantic meal where emotions were running high! -- source link
