For those who read fan fiction on this site, an writer was called out about her use of “hunk of chocolate” to refer to Sam Wilson/Falcon from MCU by multiple. She doesn’t get it and refuses to.I’m not saying go get in her inbox with messages or even boycott her, in fact, don’t. I’m just putting this out there as an example. If you don’t see yourself in people’s writing, or see things that are offensive and contribute to an oppressive history, be ready to find out that they don’t see YOU either when they’re writing. Read critically and know that you may need to walk away when you find out that they don’t know what it means to support you. Shoutout to @black-mcu-imagines though, for creating what they didn’t see. You mods are wonderful!-DamiFor those who have trouble reading the text in the imagesFirst message Me: You’re not getting “shitty anons” and NO ONE called you racist. Referring to the skin of PoC, black people in this case, with food based comparisons IS dehumanizing. There is a history of being dehumanized. That’s what you’re not realizing. Anthony Mackie referring to himself as chocolate was a joke. Black people joke about these things as a sort of ingrained coping/survival mechanism. You being called vanilla doesn’t have a history of oppression. There is also fetishization tied into it. Marvel-Ash: You are oppressing me right now. If another black person wrote that you wouldn’t have thought twice about it. I’m pretty sure Anthony Mackie isn’t just “surviving” or “coping”, he’s worth more than two million dollars. You are absolutely calling me racist when you say things like “You being called vanilla doesn’t have a history of oppression.” like you KNOW ANYTHING about me or how I’ve been treated in my life. Second message Me: To end it, the way you referred to a black man, especially as a white woman made people uncomfortable and you’re dismissing that by saying it’s just fiction and he referred to himself as such. If you need it to be relatable, think about being a woman. If you refer to yourself in any situation as just a girl, fine. Then a man takes that and writes something and says well, she’s just a girl, it’s different coming from him. Marvel-Ash: Why does it matter that I’m white? Why does it matter what a guy calls me? That’s my point here. His words, your words, do nothing to me, they change nothing. There are words, written down on computer screen. If they hurt you, then I’m sorry but I don’t/can’t empathize with you. I’m gonna answer privately because I’ve been spamming posts and I hate when others do that so I don’t want to do it. But, in summation, I’m sorry you feel that way but I don’t agree. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect you or POC. -- source link
