When ever I resist a state of being my therapist suggests I change the phrasing to “I’m willing to believe” or “I’m willing to be willing to believe…” however many *willing tos* it takes to cause the resistance to melt away. . . Am I willing to be curious? About myself? About other people? How about their lives, minds, belief systems? Am I willing to be curious about the world? My position in it? How about where my power lies and where I’m powerless? . . Oooo that last one got me - scary! I’m willing to be willing to be curious about that (trying not to cue the impending-doom type anxiety). . . Curiosity is a tool we use for learning. A gateway. It is what carries us outside of ourselves and into new ideas, concepts, experiences. . . Take an old, fossilized idea… decide to be curious about it. What if I was willing to believe that I am not 100% informed on this point? What if there is more to learn? . . This curiosity can be painful, depending on how it’s applied. Am I willing to be curious about someone who was abusive to me in the past? Yes… this is how we humanize our enemies and turn them back into people. Little flesh sacks who, in the really grand scheme, have as little power as we do. I mean, stay away from abusive people (please ), but also… stay curious. . . Curious doesn’t mean actively thinking about something. To me, curiosity is the willingness to consider alternative perspectives. A willingness and openness for learning. . . When I think of curiosity I think of a dog (funny, not a cat). Because cats have bad attitudes. That, to me, isn’t a good model of curiosity. Dogs are curious in a troublesome and optimistic sense. They are so high on JOY, that they remain ever curious and thrilled about their never ending discoveries. . . Through curiosity, we can model a dog’s ability to accept all we encounter. We don’t have to condone, approve, or welcome it into our lives… we can accept with detachment. Meaning, we don’t resist it. . . Curiosity IS freedom. Curiosity IS joy. . . Curio… a rare and intriguing object. A small wonder. Perhaps my brain can become just that.
