9.07 Bad BoysWELL. This is why I hate seeing promos/photos/synopses or any kind of spoiler. 99% of the time, I’m underwhelmed by the actual end product. :|I got unnecessarily excited with the prospect that we’d be getting another glimpse at the boys’ childhood. Because I fully expected some brotherly love or chick flick moments throughout the episode. We did get them but only towards the end. Dean even got more ‘moments’ with Timmy, the little boy who ended up being the hero. And then they had to cram in Dean’s childhood girlfriend. I cared very little for, honestly. I don’t… even remember her name. XD But they had to establish how Dean loved the life away from hunting and being in a stable relationship is the best way to show that. Having actual human relationships is not something they do nowadays with The Life. So yeah, I get it.I did find it very interesting that it was Dean who once again got a taste of a normal life - albeit for only two months. He got a home, a father figure, school, and a girlfriend. He was going to a real school dance. He was eager about it too. But he, once again, gave all that up because his brother needed him. He didn’t even hesitate when he saw Sam in the car. It was like he was just waiting for his brother to pick him up. <3Oh this was another reason why I felt more frustrated than entertained: John Winchester. It has gotten extremely difficult to do flashback episodes without JDM. He was such an important part of the series and it’s super aggravating not to see him in installments like this. It’s even worse when the writers have to write him in and settle for John Winchester juuuust out of frame/obscured/talking by way of another character. It makes my heart sink and miss him and get partially annoyed that he had to go and make it big in Hollywood. Dammit. But all the throwback aspects of the episode were delightful. Can you believe they did a Salt and Burn? *dances* It’s been aaaaages. Ages, people! They don’t usually take on ghost cases anymore. We don’t see the boys digging graves and setting the salted bones on fire. We don’t see them waving iron pokers around and getting stuck in a supernatural lockdown. We even got the classic supernatural 'accidents’ in the bathtub drowning and lawn mower hand-eating (oh, the lawn mower. They took their time with it didn’t they? XD) Since the angels and demons conflict took center stage, we spent very little time with the simple, early MOTW formats, so this was refreshing. And my favorite tribute to the classics? DEAN’S AMULET OMG. I produced actual squeals of glee when I saw it hanging around young Dean’s neck in the diner. I wanted to yank it off and give it to present Dean. That piece of jewelry had a huge significance in the boys’ lives that I refuse to accept it’s in a motel trash can somewhere. One of them has it, I still believe that. XDThey’re back to saving people and hunting things, when things were a lot simpler - even for just one case. I panicked for a second when they realized that it was Timmy who anchored the angry ghost on Earth. It was like the woman with the haunted kidney all over again. Fortunately, Timmy was able to let his mother go, and urge his mother to do the same. Zeke did not have to make another unscheduled appearance and fix everything again with his angelic powers. In the end, little Timmy was safe, Dean’s ex-girlfriend was safe, and it was another win for the boys. Before they left, Sam asked his brother why he had left that good life behind. Oh Sam, do you even have to ask? Well, it seemed like he knew the answer to that anyway (also because Dean had said it in the handful of times he allowed himself a chick flick moment), because he thanked Dean so <3 <3 <3 <3 <3This felt more like a filler to me than anything else, which is okay. Not all of the elements worked but those that did worked well. I got all nostalgic watching this episode and that’s a good break from the very different direction the show has taken. Now, can someone from wardrobe fish out the amulet from the box it’s in and give it to Jensen?
