firelordderpy:bizarrolord:sighinastorm:guinastasia:profeminist:“The book I’m reading just asked “why is the story of the boy who cried wolf told over and over in our society, and not the story of Cassandra, the woman who told the truth but was never believed?”- @heykerra“The Cassandra metaphor (variously labelled the Cassandra “syndrome”, “complex”, “phenomenon”, “predicament”, “dilemma”, or “curse”) occurs when valid warnings or concerns are dismissed or disbelieved. The term originates in Greek mythology. Cassandra was a daughter of Priam, the King of Troy. Struck by her beauty, Apollo provided her with the gift of prophecy, but when Cassandra refused Apollo’s romantic advances, he placed a curse ensuring that nobody would believe her warnings. Cassandra was left with the knowledge of future events but could neither alter these events nor convince others of the validity of her predictions.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandra_(metaphor)Because the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” is about a little shit who liked to make up stories so much that nobody believed him when he finally DID tell the truth, and Cassanda was someone who ALWAYS told the truth, but was never believed. It’s not the same thing. The first one is to warn people not to lie all the time, because then nobody will believe you when you ARE telling the truth. The BWCW screwed himself over, and it was totally his fault.Whereas poor Cassandra was simply a victim. Right. BWCW has a moral to it; it’s a proper fable. The tale of Cassandra doesn’t and isn’t, except in the standard Greek message of “don’t piss off the gods”. Her scoffers had no choice but to scoff, it was divine edict. Thus it has no particular instructive value. And it has Jack Shit to do with sex/gender. As above, “the boy who cried wolf” was being a little shithead, whereas Cassandra is a victim of divine punishment because she pissed the Greek gods off, and the punishment was ironic because she was a seer. (If you want a male example of someone who was punished with an ironic punishment for pissing the gods off, see Tantalus or Sisyphus.)NOT EVERYTHING IS SEXISM. Christ.“There once was a girl who cried wolf……” “Oh how sexist”“Of course men wouldn’t believe her”“Are you suggesting women lie about important stuff” “This is Mysogonistic and demeaning of women” “Why isn’t it the boy who cried wolf? Men are the liars!” You can’t win. -- source link
