Valen and her new calf Although he is still very young it is already confirmed that Valen’s calf is a male. The playful calf was photographed rolling over his mother’s back and his gender was confirmed by three separate orca researchers. Valen did not beach herself to hunt in 2014, instead she chose to stay in deep water and care for her young son. But Valen’s own mother Maga and other females were on hand to keep Valen well fed. Wild orcas spend their lives at their mother’s side, there are now three generations of orcas in Maga’s small group. This young male has been born into a highly specialised group of orcas and he may one day learn from his mother Valen how to strand himself to hunt, the same way she learned from her mother and the infamous male Mel. -- source link
