They say that success in this industry is all about who you know.At first, I thought that this meant artists giving each other job referrals and networking to further their careers. It wasn’t until recently that I realized that “networks”, or more sincerely groups of friends, have incredible value beyond ‘maybe knowing someone who might hire you someday’.Last week at dinner, Josh (http://www.thestoryboardartist.com/Site/Home.html) told me about how having a complete portfolio is so much more important than have a great portfolio. This deceptively simple piece of advice knocked me out of a 6 month slump and changed my entire perspective on job hunting. After I had been absent from weekly sketch nights for a month or so, Valerie messaged me to make sure I was okay and to let me know she’s there to help.Steven (https://www.instagram.com/syu_designstudio/) called me up the other night because we’d both been so busy we hadn’t seen each other in months. He told me about his latest strategy to “trim the fat” in his life so he could focus more on the things he’s passionate about. All of these people I’ve met since I moved to California less than a year ago, have made a world of difference in my life. They haven’t given me jobs or introduced me to studio big wigs. They’ve supported me, listened to me, shared their strife with me. We don’t connect because we want to make more money. We connect because this is what we love to do, and we love to do it together.PS. I’ve also lifted this philosophical post style whole cloth from Steven Yu. He recently started a really cool blog combining his love for design and his love for martial arts. You should check it out.https://theartofthefight.wordpress.com/ -- source link
