antikythera-astronomy: Android DreamscapesRecently some Google artificial intelligence researchers wrote an article about Google’s “artificial neural networks”.It’s a network inspired by the complex connections that make up our brains.Well these researchers at Google had to investigate how well their artificial intelligence network was learning from the images they showed it.What they found is stunning and beautiful.This computer system, in order to be able to generate images we ask for, needs to become familiar with what those things are. Some examples of things it’s become familiar with are buildings, animals and dumbbells.Humans sometimes see things that aren’t there. We see faces in pieces of toast. We hear the voice of a deceased loved one amidst a background of transience. We recognize images we’ve been developed to pick out.When these researchers fed an image of a cloudy sky to the computer can you guess what the android saw in the sky?What do we see when we lay down on a clear day and look up?It saw the shapes of animals overhead.Let me be clear: this is still a relatively primitive A.I. network… compared to the human brain. I think it’s probably time we put deeper thought into the ramifications of this research though - as a society.When you look at these images, what do you see? Perhaps we’d be remiss if we didn’t say that we might be starting to see a little bit of ourselves.These A.I. networks are being developed by Google for use in things like facial recognition software.
