That’s legendary rodeo cowboy Fred Whitfield (top right), riding alongside his friend and rodeo protege Cory Solomon (top left), at the Calgary Stampede yesterday – Canada’s biggest annual rodeo event – saluting the crowd after the two of them got the best scores on the day’s tie-down roping event (bottom) to earn wildcard spots in today’s final. Fred Whitfield is an 8-time world champion at tie-down roping, with $3.1 million in career rodeo prize money. He won the tie-down roping event at the Calgary Stampede in 2001 and 2007. HIs autobiography, titled “Gold Buckles Don’t Lie”, is due for release at the end of July. However, Whitfield’s young friend and neighbor Cory Solomon is one of rodeo’s rising stars, who beat Whitfield in a one-on-one showdown at last year’s Stampede, signalling to many a possible passing of the torch. -- source link
