Roman Calendar - August 3, Supplicia Canum (Punishment of the dogs)An annual cruel and bizarre ritual/sacrifice in which live dogs were put on a cross and then paraded through the streets of the city. Geese on the other hand were honored; they were clad in gold and purple and carried in the same procession, According to ancient sources geese were celebrated, since these animals saved Romans by raising alarm during Brennus’ attack against Capitolium (390/387 BCE). Roman watch dogs on the other hand kept on sleeping when Gauls attacked. To be honest surviving Roman calendars don’t mention this ritual, but Pliny the Elder writes about in his Natural History. According to him the ritual took place on ante diem tertium Nonas Augustas and later scholars mention the same date.Rome, Capitoline Museum, August 2019 -- source link
