On this day in History, 1687 — The Parthenon is destroyed during the Siege of Athens.When the Venetians invaded Greece in 1687, the Ottoman Turks used the former Greek Temple as a gunpowder magazine and armory.  On September 26th, 1687 a Venetian mortar shell struck the Parthenon, igniting the gunpowder magazine and causing a massive explosion.  Subsequent looting of the Parthenon by the victorious Venetians after the siege added more damage to the ancient structure. -- source link
