rustyboots: OK, I haven’t really been updating this site but I’ve finally seen “Brand: A Secong Coming” and I want to comment on the ridiculous nonsense that the press is spinning about Russell supposedly dissing Katy Perry in it. He doesn’t! The stuff about “vacuous, plastic lifestyle” is about him noticing the disparity between his (not just Katy’s, but HIS) lifestyle compared to what he observed of the poverty in Africa. He’s questioning HIMSELF. He’s describing how, as part of this famous couple, he ended up at all these fancy events that really meant nothing. Saying this is not saying that it’s Katy’s fault or that she herself was “vacuous and plastic” as the media is claiming. He’s talking about the lifestyle they both (and all people in entertainment in general) were/are living compared to the devastating poverty that exists elsewhere in the world. Clearing that out of the way, there is also the matter of Katy’s actual appearance in the film. It goes like this: Scene at Occupy Wall Street: Interviewer: Would you bring your wife into this? Russell: I’m kind of protective of her, you know, to be honest. And I kind of think that … she’s 26, and she’s “in it” (the fame/Hollywood lifestyle, being as successful as she is/was at the time). Cut to Russell speaking to Katy in interview at their home: Russell: But do you find that it’s a conflict, with what you want spiritually, and what you or we do professionally? Katy: I don’t want to give all this up. [Cut to Russell smiling adoringly at her.] But I do get worried, like for instance when we watched that Buddha documentary, and Buddha had a baby and a wife, and the story goes that he left them, because he was afraid that he would get too attached. I mean, I think you’re a genius … you make me look good, and that’s why we’re together and I picked you. [Russell still smiling adoringly at her.] But you don’t have to like, give all of it away to prove a point. Russell: Well done. Thank you for letting us do an interview with you darling. [Russell is basically just staring at her with emoji heart eyes during this whole thing.] Katy (getting up from chair, throwing mock tantrum): This is stupid! Russell laughing: Uh oh! She’s burst out! [Katy kicks something.] Russell, with mock horror: No! Katy! These are all our things! These are important. [Russell kisses her cheek and stares adoringly at her some more.] Katy: But they don’t have an affect as much as I do, because I control the pussy. Russell, laughing: Give us a cuddle, that was really really brilliant. End scene. So, you see, the overwhelming vibe in this whole thing is, Russell absolutely fricking adores her and is exceedingly tolerant of her “brattiness.” (Photo above is an example of him looking at her adoringly.) It all has a lighthearted feel. He did happen to be questioning his goals and his lifestyle at the time, but my impression is that he hoped that she might be on board with the changes he wanted. In no way is he shown to be disrespecting her or insulting her. I know it’s probably futile, but I wish some of the Katy Perry fans who have bought into the media’s lies about this issue would actually watch the film themselves and see how non-offensive the mentions and footage of Katy really are.
