Graphed here is the emotional arc associated with expertise building - as interpreted and refined from some four quadrant theory. The initial challenge is to generate any emotional energy at all for the project. If you don’t care about a thing, why would you bother getting good at it? Once that initial burst is present, you can coast on the emotional high of the thrill of novelty while your skills gradually increase. Over time though, the dissonance between desire and ability erode your happiness and you get a slump or a crash. Your skills are still improving (and are likely quite refined at this point) but it does not feel like it. That’s when it’s tempting to give up and when it is most useful to have a friend to encourage you. In the final phase, you’re pushed back into a stable state where the comfort of competence carries you through the exercise of your skill. This is all a bit simplistic - there will likely be several emotional crashes along the way and skill may plateau as well - but you should be mindful that you’re in the middle of a process and the emotions that you’re experiencing are transient in a predictable way.https://www.desmos.com/calculator/7fddwmbnv7 -- source link
