spifczyk: Over seven million people voted for someone else than Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump - two main candidates in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Interestingly, some regional patterns emerge when you visualize where people voted for them. First, for the American South it was only about Clinton or Trump. Less than 3% of voters choose a third-party candidate. Secondly, usually third-party candidates can count on their home states. Gary Johnson of New Mexico got almost 10% of the vote there and Evan McMullin persuaded over 20% of Utah voters to cast their votes for him. This rule does not apply to the Green Party candidate Jill Stein who got only 1.45% of the vote in their home state of Massachusetts - less than in states so unlikely to vote green like Kansas or Montana. Going back to McMullin, his support hides another demographic phenomena - the Mormon expansion. Utah, home state of the American mormons, has gotten too small for them and Mormons started to settle down in nearby states such as Idaho or Nevada. They brought their beliefs with them - one of which is support for the oppressed, something they disagree strongly on with Donald Trump - which led to significant percentage of the vote in some counties in those states for McMullin. -- source link
