The Werner Herzog documentary “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” on France’s spectacular Chauvet cave was a formative experience. I connect with that time in history, society, and art like no other. I made this piece in the spirit of the Panel of the Lions; it’s one of very few depictions of predators in Stone Age art and it captures cave lions as they intrinsically were rather than as some human symbolism. After creating the 3 dimensional rock surface I lit quite a few candles and worked with charcoal, chalk, and conte crayon in the dark.
