Captain Charles deForest Chandler poses with his Lewis Machine Gun mounted to a Wright Model B airplane. Chandler became the first person to mount a machine gun to an airplane on June 7th, 1912. He demonstrated his invention at the Army Aviation School in College Park, Maryland by making several passes over the airfield while firing at targets on the ground. A reporter for the Brooklyn Eagle commented, “The potential results of swooping aircraft, armed to the teeth with death-dealing bullets, are staggering. Is it possible that the air is to harbor the greatest destructive forces in modern warfare? There seems nothing to prevent it.” -- source link
