Maned WolfThe maned wolf inhabits grasslands in eastern South America. It has the markings and characteristics of a fox. However, despite it’s name and characteristics, it is not related to the wolf or the fox and is a different type of canid and unlike wolves the maned wolf does not form packs. The maned wolf is omnivorous, but mostly feeds on fruits. Especially the wolf apple. They also feed on small mammals, mostly rodents. In hunting prey, they rotate their ears to listen for their prey. They then tap the ground with their front foot to bring out the prey and then pounce to catch it.Standing 3 feet tall, the maned wolf is the tallest canid of South America. The maned wolf is not threatened, but is near so. Deforestation, like many animals that inhabit the earth, is their biggest threat.Photo by: Sarah d via Flickr. -- source link
