allgarbo: As winter descended on Stockholm, Greta looked forward to traditional winter sports activities: skiing, ice skating—and a holiday favorite, sleigh riding. Her treasured Scandinavian winters were all about cuddling in front of fires, bundling up for long walks down romantically lit streets, snow crunching crisply beneath one’s feet, and the nostalgic smell of pine. Years later, Greta would tell the story of a return visit to Sweden during which she had gone for a walk on a frozen lake with Horke Wachtmeister. Suddenly, the ice cracked and they found themselves neck deep in the water. “Her terrified companion implored her to keep calm while Greta first hiked out her walking stick, pulled herself, and then her companion, to the icy surface,” Cecil Beaton recorded. With clothes dripping wet and freezing in the sub-zero weather, Greta and Horke considered going to a nearby house and calling a doctor. But they could imagine the headlines, so they risked pneumonia and ran all of the way home. When Nils Wachtmeister arrived home, he found Garbo in bed with his wife drinking hot whiskey—and, according to Greta, he laughed. (Greta Garbo in Sweden c. 1935) -- source link
