books0977: Portrait of Miss Cornelia Lyman Warren, Trustee of Wellesley College (1871). Alexandre Cabanel (French, 1823-1889). Oil on canvas. Davis Museum and Cultural Center. On one of the family’s frequent trips to Europe, the Warrens commissioned Cabanel to paint this portrait of their youngest child when she was fourteen years old. Her fashionable equestrian outfit attested to her passion for horseback riding. In 1876, Warren passed the Harvard Examination for Women, entitling her to study with other women at the “Harvard Annex,” precursor of Radcliffe College. However, instead of enrolling, Warren decided to take private tutor lessons and devote herself to social services. Later, she became a Trustee of Wellesley College. -- source link
