Bird no. 311. I am beholden to no one..I woke up and remembered I’d cleared my calendar..I reveled in the endless possibilities of the day..I defended it’s sanctity against encroaching responsibilities..And then I watched 8 hours of Netflix and ate three chocolate bars..How is it that social science has given us the cheat codes, we know all the rules, and we still manage to completely miss the point?.We KNOW what people regret when they die. We KNOW who reports their lives best lived. It’s well documented, and it’s not some big secret..It’s human connection. It’s relationships. Talking, touching, eye contact. For good reason! Our distant ancestors couldn’t survive without it. We need to belong in order to thrive..We KNOW this and we still choose distraction over interaction. We use our phones for scrolling instead of connecting. We eat alone instead of inviting a friend..If it feels like a delightful treat, that’s one thing. But if you feel like a steaming pile of crap after, that’s a whole other thing and we need to pay attention to that feeling..If you tell yourself you don’t like “parties”, or “potlucks”, or “other people”, keep looking. Inside and out. Figure out what YOU want, and take the initiative to get it..You can start small. Message an old friend that you miss. Invite a new friend over for dinner or suggest a picnic. Look for simple ways to share experiences. Finding your people is worth the work..Or at least, it seems that way on TV..#peptalk #arethereanymorechocolatebars #imonlyonseasontwo (at Montreal, Quebec) -- source link
