Bird no. 305. Discovery. When I ask people to draw me a bird, I’m often surprised by how many people are appalled by the idea “I don’t know how to draw”, they protest, “I don’t even know what birds look like”. Are you kidding? Of course you do! You’ve seen them your whole life. You know how they get around, you know how they eat, you know that they usually have two eyes and two feet and a tail. I counter, “don’t you want to know what you think?”.And let me say, the results are always such a joy! Everyone who chooses to go on this 30 second adventure with me produces a delightful depiction of a bird. Despite their discomfort, they knew all along. Art can look like anything, it doesn’t have to be perfect..I really got a taste of my own medicine with this cup today “You know what cups look like”, I tell myself. “You’ve been using cups all your life. You’ll be fine.” Wrong. Not fine. Straight edges are not as forgiving as feathers, the nuance of shading a smooth object completely evades me, and what is this, a cup for ants!? Chickadees are so small! .Nevertheless, I was right about one thing: I set out to make a cup, and it is pretty clearly a cup Despite the booming voice of my inner critic, it’ll do. This ain’t cupstrips, after all (thankfully )..I’m glad for the reminder that we all have comfort zones. I think the only way to expand them is doing an awkward sort of hokey pokey into the discomfort. It’s always worth a try.
