“Amore…the dance of love…beneath the car park”The girl on the left I’ve been watching for about two months now, as she grew into womanhood. The small suitor on the right has been a recent visitor. He doesn’t weave an impressive web like she does. Unlike the symmetrical work of art she makes, his is just a haphazard set of tethers affixed to strands on her web. after he makes his connections, he jerks and shakes on her web as if he’s caught prey to attract her.I watched for an hour tonight as he played this ruse to get her attention. She finally capitulated, and just as she neared him, he dropped to safety, dangling just inches above me. I tried to get a shot of their closest contact, but in the dim light and with their speed, all I could get was a set of blurs. This played out several times over and again, and I think what he was leaving behind for her each time was a packet of his sperm. It’s obvious that a full physical contact encounter with her would have been deadly to him. At one point, a lacewing got ensnared in his tendrils, and he transferred it to a corner of her web…I think it was an offering. My attention finally served to be a distraction, and she hid away, leaving him to tug on her heart strings, acting the part of a victim of love, jerking and shaking as if to be prey. I fucking love spiders. -- source link
