hubsher: Maekar had four sons and two daughters. His oldest son, Daeron was a coward who spent most of his life drinking away his sorrows. His younger brother Aerion “Brightflame” was a vain, sadistic, delusional asshole. Aerion liked to torture his younger brother Aegon, killing his pet cat and even threatening to castrate him. Eventually he caused enough trouble to get himself exiled across the Narrow Sea. By the time Maekar died, his two oldest sons were already dead. Daeron died from an STD (gotta wrap it up!) Aerion on the other hand drank a bottle of wildfire, believing that he would be transformed into a dragon. Instead he burned alive, from the inside out. Bad way to die. With Maekar and his two oldest sons dead, the line of succession was once again in question. A Great Council was called where noble lords argued the merits of various claimants. Daeron’s only child was a half-wit daughter and Aerion left behind his own son, though many feared he would inherit his father’s madness. Both were passed over. The council next turned to Maekar’s third son Aemon. By this time though, Aemon was already a sworn Maester, and so he refused their offer to be named king. So with no other options, Aegon V was named king. The fourth son of a fourth son, he was known as Aegon the Unlikely. Aegon had spent most of his youth on the road, squiring for Ser Duncan the Tall, a lowborn hedge knight who would become his mentor, best friend and eventually Kingsguard commander. Having lived his life amongst peasants, Aegon enacted many reforms throughout his reign to better the lives of the commoners. While the people loved him for it, the high lords resented his “infringements” of their rights as nobles.Maester Aemon knew that as long as he was around, his brother’s enemies would try to use him in their plots to dethrone him. So he volunteered to head to the Wall and join the Night’s Watch. When we catch up with him in Game of Thrones he’s over a hundred years old, blind and forgotten by the rest of the world. -- source link
