Taking the Heat… In triple-degree heat, softball umpire Dennis Cusick inspects the field prior to a tournament game. He’s wearing pink, instead of blue, in honor of his late mother and all others who have battled breast cancer. He buys his own equipment. He’s invested more than a decade of his time and money in training and travel to games. He knows the rule book inside and out, and he has a passion for ensuring the safety of every player. But as this game wears on, adults sitting in the shade and sipping a cold drink start to second-guess balls and strikes. The rumbles start, then a few shouts.
