Still, a black master or mistress could do as they liked with their slaves, and if they wanted to dress them up like a french maid, then no one was going to stop them. Some felt it was even more humiliating for a male slave to be dressed up in such a feminine, subservient outfit than it was for them to be butt naked, and I’m certain that many a male slave would agree. Dressing ones male slaves in drag was certainly a good method for keeping them humble and knowing of their place, but even those masters and mistresses who favored these methods would usually have their slaves remove the uniform completely if they were ever out in public. Total nudity was still the public norm for white slaves, and few owners would want to make a scene by parading their slave around in public wearing people clothes, even if they were gender inappropriate. -- source link
