Peregrinos al frente del Atlantico, Fisterra, Galicia, 2001.For many pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, the trip is not complete without the walk onward to the Sea at Fisterra (Finisterra). On the medieval pilgrimage scallop shells were collected there to bring home as a symbol of the completed pilgrimage. Now most pilgrims buy them at the start of their trek and wear the shell on their way to Santiago. The two pilgrims in the photo, an American man and an Australian woman, were among my companions for my second walk from the French border, part of an informal group which met early and walked at the same pace. The boots are shown ready to burn, many pilgrims (most do not walk home now) burn their boots at this, the final stage of their pilgrimage.¡Felices Fiesta de Santiago! -- source link
