#Repost @natstronaut (@get_repost)・・・I recently learned that yesterday was the anniversary of Medgar Evers’ death, a civil rights leader in Mississippi. A lot of people know Dr. Martin Luther King but have never heard of Evers. Evers was a WWII veteran and college graduate in business administration, as well as a husband and father. He was the field secretary of the NAACP at a time when even being associated meant you could be a target, let alone being a leader in the organization. In Mississippi he set up boycotts against businesses that practiced discrimination, and investigated violent acts like the Emmett Till lynching, where a 14 year old boy was lynched for talking to a white woman. He constantly received death threats from white supremacist groups for his efforts in integrating the South. On June 12th, 1963 after coming home from a NAACP meeting, Evers was assassinated in his driveway by a member of the KKK. The all-white juries failed to reach verdicts in the first two trials of the killer in the 1960s. It was 30 years later when the killer was finally convicted in a new trial based on new evidence, and was sentenced to life in prison.-----#naacp #medgarevers #blacklivesmatter #blm #civilrights #civilrightsact #votingrights #americanhistory #equality #equalrights #ww2veteran -- source link
