I covered a pair of shoes! I’d been meaning to try this for ages, but was intimidated. Early 18th century reproduction shoes are hard to find and cost much more than I can afford right now, and late 18th century ones are such a different style that they’d look out of place with my 1730’s suit.I started with this shabby old pair of thrift store shoes that I’ve had for a while, and built up the toes to be as close as possible to the weird flat domed toes of the early 18th century. I used fabric to drape & trace out a pattern and glued on a cover made of leather from a jacket I got at a clothing swap. The front covering went on first, and then the back with the latchets, right over the lacing bits which I’d trimmed down. The buckles are breeches buckles from Burnley & Trowbridge (fortunately I have two pairs, so I can still wear the other on breeches) because early 18th century shoe buckles tend to be pretty small. They’re not perfect, and the toes ought to be wider, but I’m really happy with them! I still need to do a bit of stitching to reinforce some areas, because I’m worried the glue won’t be strong enough. I’ll do a blog post with more information! -- source link
