Happy birthday, Your MajestyToday marks the 90th birthday of Britain’s queen. So we thought it fitting to revisit her visit in 1983. Here’s a shot outside of City Hall. While in Los Angeles, Queen Elizabeth II met Mayor Tom Bradley, seen next to her above. In a speech at City Hall, she defended Britain’s actions in the Falkland Islands, praised Los Angeles’ diversity and economy, and even got in a joke. She quipped that her northward journey from San Diego that weekend paralleled a similar trip made 400 years earlier by Sir Francis Drake who (unsuccessfully) claimed this territory as Nova Albion for the first Queen Elizabeth and her successors – forever.“I am happy, though, to give you an immediate assurance, Mr. Mayor, that I have not come here to press that claim.”There are more photos of that visit. You can see them here. Photo by Los Angeles Times -- source link
