ratfarm:The rotted porch is no more!We finished this in spring but I forgot to post. It’s nice to hang laundry without falling through and have a kid-safe porch. Our Rat Hack for this project was adding supports to the cantilevelered beams (they go all the way through the house) and sealing them and the other cross boards with roofing tar since water dripping down on them had caused so much rot. The boards are also spaced a bit further than usual to aide in drainage. The rotted parts were dug out, blasted with a heat gun, and epoxied. The wood was very soft but fortunately got a lot harder after uncovered and left to bake in the sun, then sealed with roofing tar. Luckilly the rot hadn’t made it to the parts of the beams inside the house, that would have been a real pain to fix. -- source link
