This Target First Saturday, Tavi Gevinson, the creator of Rookie Magazine, is in conversation with Anna Holmes, writer and founder of Jezebel, the Gawker Media blog that operates under the tagline, “Celebrity, Sex, Fashion for Women. Without Airbrushing.” Pioneers in their field, Tavi and Anna will discuss creating media for and by women, in celebration of the release of Rookie Yearbook Three.Tavi got her chops in the media business at eleven years old when her blog The Style Rookie caught the attention of the high fashion set. From her personal blog, Tavi launched the feminist nexus Rookie Magazine, which features writing, photography, and videos by both staff writers and avid readers. The site revolves around a monthly theme and posts on teenage time: after school, after dinner, and before bed. As Rookie’s founder and editor-in-chief, Tavi has built an online community for teenage girls, where she writes about her hopes, fears, and ruminations on the future and cultivates a safe space for women around the world to share theirs. In 2012, Rookie stepped out of the Internet and into readers’ hands with the first annual print edition, Rookie Yearbook One. A companion to Rookie’s online publishing, the Yearbooks are layered volumes that are at once contemplative and humorous, probing and jubilant. Tavi said in an interview with T Magazine, “If I was super-rich, I would totally use my gap year to just put a bunch of stuff in a tiny museum somewhere.” Now in its junior year, Rookie Yearbook Three is what I imagine that museum—a collection of stories, advice, and illustrations from cool women—might feel like. In planning the line-up for March’s First Saturday, our programming team used the theme of “Women Changemakers” as a launching point.
