The M1A1 Carbine, the Paratroopers Carbine,Produced during World War II, the M1A1 Carbine was a special paratroopers model of the venerated M1 Carbine. The M1A1 was identical to the M1 Carbine in respect of function, but was made to be lighter and more compact for paradrops. Modifications included a foldout wire stock and the addition of a pistol grip. Most M1A1’s produced were manufactured by Inland, which was a division of General Motors. They were not only issued to US Paratroopers, but British and other Allied paratroopers as well. Around 140,000 were produced during World War II, with many later being used in the Korean War. -- source link
