Nara was probably one of the surprises I wish we’d spent more time investigating beforehand because we not only just went in/out in a few hours, we also had rain to deal with, which limited how much time we spent there. Nara Park has some really interesting sights to see, a large native deer population living on the park grounds and it’s not too far from Osaka or Kyoto, making it a perfect side-trip. One note of advice. This was probably the least English friendly day we had as not only a considerable amount of trouble getting to Nara (we’d boarded the wrong express train from Osaka), but it also had few points along the way to navigate us there. Not to say it’s not foreigner friendly, we enjoyed ourselves immensely, but I would advise a map or iPhone with maps loaded, or instructions from WikiTravel to make the trip to the park easier. Nothing is as direct as it seems, even if you’re just walking in a straight line for 2 miles. Stuff ends up being way more three dimensional when you’re there in person as opposed to looking at a map, and it will be way more helpful to have as much instruction as possible going in. -- source link
