Back in 1st and 2nd edition, the idea of ridiculously high lethality dungeons was just…normal. The game was almost a competition. The DM placed traps and treasure around a dungeon and the players tried to find all the traps, disarm them, and abscond with the treasure (also fight monsters).Back in the day, these were not only fair game, they were often developed in response to specific tactics to defeat OTHER traps. And many of these aren’t the worst traps that DMs came up with and circulated.Published adventures would often get people talking about “Yeah, we got through that with only 14 character deaths!” as a brag. Getting through with none meant either that your DM had underestimated you, or your rogue had a DIVINE night.Edit: Grimtooth is from the 1E era, just for clarification, and by one of TSR’s major competitors. -- source link
