daddythorin:thranduil-kingofsass:lostwiginity:thranduil-kingofsass:After seeing The Hobbit, it struck me that some of my American friends didn’t know what conkers is. I’m not sure how widespread it is throughout the States (if at all), but I thought I’d share with you what it is, to clear up any confusion.Basically, conkers is a children’s game that’s traditionally played in Britain and Ireland. In this game, you take the seeds of horse chestnuts, drill holes through them, attach them to a string, and then you can begin the game. These are conkers: The game of conkers is played between two people. You take turns hitting each others conker with your own. One player will dangle their conker while the other player swings their conker to hit it.Basically, you become the victor if you break the other’s conker.(I’m sure there are a bunch of variations of this, but this is what I grew up playing it as) So when Bilbo says he has skill at conkers, he’s saying that he could attach a chestnut to a bit of string and thwack it at people. -- source link
