Snow White, by Donald Barthelme, was given to me by Gemina Novy during my last trip to LA. I began reading it as my plane lifted off and finished as it landed.I love surreal writing, I love trying to patch together meaning out of sentences that are falling apart at the seams. Barthelme’s writing is eccentrically woven, mixing glimmers of fantasy with the mundane and boring. It is clever. It is rambling and perfectly composed, just off kilter enough. The plot is simply a vehicle for his writing. He interrupts the book halfway through, quizzing the reader, rhetorically, on their comprehension. It doesn’t matter. The book misplaces characters and words. It is incomprehensible, at moments, as most of my favorite writing is at times. I like writing that forces you to project your own ideas onto it.If you like clever juxtaposition and the deconstruction of archetypes, you’ll like this clever little tale by Barthelme. -- source link
