Gender: MalePod: N/A (Mother was Katina)Place of Capture: Captive bornDate of Capture: Born September 9, 1993Age at Capture: Captive born On September 9, 1993, Icelandic female Katina gave birth to her third calf, a male later known as Taku, at SeaWorld Orlando. He and Katina became very close and spent most of their time together. Katina would go on to have a female calf named Unna as well as a male calf named Ikaika. Both Taku and Ikaika became very close and could often be seem swimming in the mother-calf position. In 2004, a female named Takara was transferred to the Orlando park. On November 23, 2005, Takara gave birth to her second calf, Taku’s first. The calf was a male later known as Trua, who still resides at the Orlando park today. In 2006, Taku sired his second calf. However, Taku had impregnated his mother, Katina; meaning his second calf was also his sister. The female, known as Nalani, was the very first surviving inbred calf in captivity and also currently resides at the Orlando park. As a result of this breeding, Taku was moved to the San Antonio park on November 18, 2006 where he was reunited with his sister Unna. Unfortunately, on October 18, 2007, Taku died. The official cause of death is listed as Severe Multifocal Interstitial Pneumonia. Some sources claim that Taku’s real cause of death was West Nile Virus, contracted from being bitten by a mosquito while logging at the surface of a pool. x | x | x | x | x | x | x -- source link
