“Knock knock!” she called out, rapping a moment on the half-closed door to my office, not waiting for my response before stepping in with a handful of files. “Just a few more from outside to put back…”Deep in my notes, I grunted out an acknowledgement and looked up from my desk, spinning a quarter turn to watch as she reached up high to place a file into place.“You know we have a…stool…for…thhh…” I trailed off, voice failing me as I gaped at her striking figure in profile. Strong calves lifting her to tip-toes, back arched, big chest thrust forward, one leg back for balance.“I know…” she smiled, turning towards me with a chipper, distracting bounce as she returned to her feet, “…but I’m a tall enough girl..!”“Yeah,” I replied, kicking myself for asking even before I asked it, “So…How tall are you?”“Five-eight-and-a-half,” she answered, “last time I checked!”Out of respect to my own state-of-mind I purposefully didn’t give that (a little joke) much thought. I asked how her day was going. “Oh, so good!” she quipped, smiling and leaning, onto her left shoulder, against the file cabinet, “Your girls are all so good, so nice.” Her hands crossed in front of her. “In fact, I was thinking of asking them out to happy hour, after work, tonight? Sort of a fun thing, to get to know everyone better?”“Oh..” I responded, caught a little off guard. I nodded to myself: not a terrible idea, might be nice for them. “Sure…want to use the company credit card? My treat?”“Oooo sure!!” she sang, eyes lighting up as she stood stock-straight again. Both hands remained crossed in front of her and I couldn’t help my eyes darting down to note how her arms framed the impressive bulge of her chest in her silk blouse. She had unbuttoned a bit since this morning and nnghhh…“Here…” I offered, pulling open the top drawer of my desk, to find - ah! there it is! - “…you can use Jeannette’s old card. Just sign her name…”Melissa stepped forward to take the card from me, a big smile of enthusiasm lighting her face. Perfume washed over me and immediately I wanted her to stay a little longer, close like this.“I’ll get you your own card soon,” I found myself saying - though it had been years before I gave Jeannette her own credit card, “y’know for office…stuff..”Standing over me again, her eyes were gleaming with proud delight. She’d obviously never been trusted with this sort of thing before.“Now, you’re all not going to drink me to financial ruin, are you?” I cracked, wincing a little at the dorkiness of my own humor.“Oh, no!!” she giggled, “no, uh-unh! We’ll be good!” She rocked a bit, back-and-forth, on her heels. Then her eyes lit up again. “But you should come! You should come with us!” she sang, eagerly.Oh my god, no, was my first thought…but then came my second. Well, what if…No. Not a good idea. For so many reasons. “Ah, thanks,” I answered with a patient smile, though so much of me wanted to throw caution to the wind, just for one drink, “but you girls don’t want me there. Have fun. Anyway, I’m supposed to, uh, go shopping for carpets, with my wife…”“Oh, don’t say that!” she laughed, “We’d love to have you with us! But okayyy…”Even her pout is sexy.“Well, you guys stay safe…” I said, turning back to my desk, to my charts, before I said anything else stupid, “Work tomorrow, don’t drink too much…”“Of course!” she agreed, “Can’t have that, around the employees.” I could still smell her perfume; it was heavenly. “You know, right?” she said, a wink in her voice, “How I get when I’ve been drinking?”My heart fluttered as I recalled that night of drunken messaging on Instagram.Strength, brother.“Stay safe,” I repeated, “…and, uh…bring me a receipt?”“No problem,” she said, still with ebullient glee, “…boss.”———————————More of the continuing saga: “Growing into the Job”.
